How you can help! At this time the most important thing you can do to help is spread the word about HyPP. Say you’re at work and hear your boss mention his friend is buying a horse for his wife. This would be the time to ask “Do you know about HyPP?”
Trying to talk about a disease can be boring and this only effects horse owners so why bother? Talking about HyPP does not have to be boring! Remember HyPP is the ONLY disease in the world people will breed for. This is a great trivia question for the bar, a party or any social gathering. “O.K guys what is the only disease in animals that people will breed for? Odds are no one will know it is HyPP. And when you tell them it is HyPP you will often hear. “what is HyPP?” and “why do people breed for a disease” So it turns into them asking you about HyPP and you not shoving it down their throats.
School projects Any type of paper written on HyPP is good for bringing awareness to the disease. A paper on HyPP doesn’t have to be about boring facts on the disease itself. The ethics of breeding a disease and what people will do for money are interesting topics surrounding HyPP. Even HyPP breeders for the most part agree breeding HyPP is not for the betterment of the horse industry, but they still breed it anyway for money. HyPP is also a great example of a special interest group making money. It seems weird that breeding a disease would ever become as profitable as HyPP.
The more people we reach the less chance people will end up with HyPP horses and not know how to treat the disease. Please don’t think you need to discuss HyPP only with horse owners, you may talk HyPP to someone who does not own a horse but his friend does or he starts a new job a month later and his co- worker owns a horse. People tend to remember HyPP because it is the only disease people support and that makes it stick in their minds. The more people know about HyPP the less chance an HyPP is going to suffer from improper treatment or a human is going to get hurt from a horse having an attack and falling on them. If HyPP was in dogs there would be no real danger to humans, but a thousand plus pounds coming down on top of you is a real danger!
